Northern California Center for the Photographic Arts Location Workshops

Learning to create great photographs only takes place when technical information can be understood, applied and expanded on in a real world environment.
It is my primary goal that these Center Workshops will make a difference in the art of anyone who participates. My hope is that it will add voices to help preserve this wonderful art form.

The first Fundamentals Workshop will be about: Creating a Sense of Place / Capturing a three-dimensional world in a two-dimensional photograph. These will be a study in how to design compelling photographs by the use of tonal separation, leading lines, vanishing point, textures, depth of field, light and shadow all of which give a feeling of depth to a photograph. Both of these locations have been chosen because they offer such a diverse and bold use of design. This Workshop will build on the fundamental techniques that you may already know and incorporate the elements of design that make great images.

The morning session will begin at San Francisco's Legion of Honor @ 8:00 am - http://www.famsf.org/legion/. This exquisite building, completed in 1924, is wonderfully ornate with angles, arches and openings that fame the surrounding space. Midday we will move to Fort Point, located at the south foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. This building was completed in 1861and was constructed to guard the entry to San Francisco Bay - http://www.nps.gov/fopo/. Fort Point is an imposing linear structure and an excellent counterpoint to the Legion of Honor.

Student Experience Levels & Preparation

Students must be able to use the manual settings on their cameras. We will go over the settings and how they work together to add powerful tools to the creative process. If you are unsure how to use these manual functions please let me know the manufacturer and model of your camera and we will get this clear before the session - please bring your camera's manual.

Though either telephone conversation of via email I would like to know about your experience and goals for this Workshop. For those of you who have some experience but are unsure about your skill level - we have all been there - please contact me and we will discuss whether this is appropriate for you and or how to bring you up to speed.

Equipment needed

Film: 5 - 10 rolls of 100 to 200 EI film, I am a Fuji Fan, or several new digital storage cards - be very wary of online fakes (I was burned recently).

A sturdy tripod. A tripod will be important if it is foggy, it is San Francisco after all, but the real purpose for the tripod is to learn to frame the image and look for the design elements.

Compressed air, lens cleaning solution and tissues. The micro fiber cloths work unless there is smudges or "gunk" on the lens. A soft bristle brush for taking dust off of the array.

Layered comfortable clothes. San Francisco can be very cool in the morning and very warm by midday.

Student goals

We will begin the sessions at the appointed time. This is an issue of respecting everyone's time and we will have a lot of ground to cover - thoughtfully.

Slow down, really see the world that surrounds you and then translate your vision into a work of art and make some new like minded friends along the way.

Critique These will be arranged on an individual basis. This is a very important part of the learning experience.

We all live in an world where we are constantly connected to the noise of our lives. It is my sincere hope that you will take this opportunity to turn off the outside distractions and thoughtfully open the path to your vision, realize your skills, expand on them and explore photography as your art form....... Gg

Future Treks are in the planning stages: I is my sincere hope to be able to begin holding workshops at select destinations in California and the Western United States in 2010.
