Center Photo Treks 2008

Learning to make great photographs only takes place when technical information can be applied and expanded on in a real world environment.
It is my primary goal that these Treks will make a difference in the art of anyone who participates. My hope is that it will add voices to help preserve this wonderful art form.

The first two Center Fundamentals Treks will have a common theme: Creating a Sense of Space / Capturing a three-dimensional world in a two-dimensional photograph. These Treks will be a study in how to design compelling photographs by the use of tonal separation, leading lines, vanishing point, textures, depth of field, light and shadow all of which give a feeling of depth to a photograph. All four of these locations have been chosen because they offer such a diverse and bold use of design. These Treks will build on the fundamental techniques that you already know and incorporate the elements of design that make great images whether they are photographs of architecture, landscapes or people.

Trek 1

The morning session will begin at San Francisco's Legion of Honor @ 8:00 am. This exquisite building, completed in 1924, is wonderfully ornate with angles, arches and openings that fame the surrounding space. Midday we will move to Fort Point, located at the south foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. This building was completed in 1861and was constructed to guard the entry to San Francisco Bay. Fort Point is an imposing linear structure and an excellent counterpoint to the Legion of Honor.

Trek 2

The second Trek will begin with a morning session at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. The five acre Tea Gardens were constructed for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. Midday we will move to the Palace of Fine Art, designed by Bernard Maybeck for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

Future Treks are in the planning stages:

I welcome your suggestions re: locations and group outings. Being from the midwest I can't imagine anything more fun than taking a group for photographers from the north country to the south west for a photographic adventure. I would also like to know if you are campers or hooked on hot showers. Please email suggestions for Future Treks. I want to know where you want to go.
